Boko Haram frees abducted women, girls rumoured married off to insurgents

 The Boko Haram insurgents, who reportedly abducted about 50 women and girls from two border villages between Adamawa and Borno states have freed the women among their captives.
This was disclosed in an interview by villagers, who spoke on the issue with newsmen on the telephone from their hide-outs.
They however, said that the exact number of those released could not be ascertained, but that no fewer than 45 girls were still being detained.
According to the villagers, the women and girls were abducted from Waga Mangoro which was between Gwoza in Borno and Madagali in Adamawa states.
Relatives of some of the abducted women who were later released by the insurgents also, told newsmen in Yola that some of the girls have been turned to cooks while others were married off immediately to some of the insurgents.
A relative to the one of the women who spoke on the condition of anonymity said; ”Initially, the insurgents captured 80 girls and women whom they later loaded into their vans and zoomed off into the bushes.
Later in the night, the insurgents separated the elderly women from the girls and released the women, who are now languishing in the forest because they could not relocate the towns because they were razed down by the insurgents.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen to donate $100m to tackle Ebola

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, 61, who is worth about $17billion, announced Thursday,October 23rd that he will donate $100 million to the fight against Ebola, which has killed thousands of people all around the world. This donation makes him the largest individual donor in the Ebola crisis so far.

    "Everybody feels called sometimes to really pursue a certain thing that resonates with them, and this has resonated with me. We’re up against an extremely tough opponent here. The exponential nature of the growth of this disease is really a challenge - we’ve already seen in the U.S. where one case quickly became two.” Allen told NY Times News credit: NY Times

First Lady Resigns As Permanent Secretary

Patience Jonathan, the wife of President Goodluck Jonathan has resigned her position as a Permanent Secretary in the Bayelsa State Civil Service.

The first lady is said to have vacated her position in the state Ministry of Education voluntarily but reports have it that her resignation might be connected with a rift between her and the state Governor, Seriake Dickson.

The governor and the first lady are said to have disagreed over the former’s ambition to be re-elected as governor for a second term.

Mrs. Jonathan was appointed as a permanent secretary in July 2012 leading to widespread criticism about her playing dual roles and being unsuitable for the position.

 A ministry source reportedly said:
 “The whole thing is political. It appears Madam Peace is not happy with the governor. With her resignation, the battle-line has been drawn.”

She is 57 years old  having 3 more years before the age of retirement
However, reports have it that the first lady’s terminal benefits and pension won’t be affected by her resignation as they are already being prepared.

As President Goodluck Jonathan(PDP) declares interest in 2015 election, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso(APC) says easy win for him..

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday finally declared interest in contesting the 2015 presidential election.

He told Peoples Democratic Party leaders at the Presidential Villa, Abuja that he would procure nomination form of the party before the deadline.

He has also set up a presidential declaration committee saddled with the responsibility of coming up with a formal programme for his declaration.
 On this note, The Governor of Kano State Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso said it is an easy win for him

  The governor, who is  among other older aspirants like General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Alhaji Nda Isaiah noted that he was the most qualified for the job.

Kwankwaso spoke with journalists in Ilorin Tuesday night ahead of meeting of the APC leaders and other stakeholders in the state.

He explained that with the electorates’ level of awareness, Nigeria’s growing democracy, any incumbent governor or president can be removed by the people.

According to him, he was removed as the governor of Kano State and later re elected, adding that in Ekiti State, the electorates voted against an incumbent governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi of the APC, while the same APC won election in Osun State.

He said that the trend would continue in the 2015 general elections.

His words, ‘’Any president or governor can be unseated in Nigeria now; forget about any political jamboree or propaganda that anybody or political party can be engaged in now. For me, President Jonathan will be easy to remove in 2015 election because Nigerians are angry with him. Many people will be surprised.

‘’You people are just sitting down here, if you go to the north eastern part of Nigeria, your people there are living on the hills because of the crisis of displacements while many others have fled to neighboring African countries for survival; where we are sending relief materials to them. Nigerians are no fools and people cannot be deceived. At the right time, they will speak with their votes. He said .

Freelance cameraman free of Ebola, can leave Nebraska hospital

Freelance cameraman Ashoka Mukpo no longer has the Ebola virus in his bloodstream and will be allowed to leave Nebraska Medical Center, the hospital said Tuesday.

   

"Just got my results," Mukpo Tweeted "3 consecutive days negative. Ebola free and feeling so blessed. I fought and won, with lots of help. Amazing feeling."

The 33-year-old was working for NBC News when he tested positive for Ebola in Liberia. Mukpo was among the working team of  Dr. Nancy Snyderman, the network's chief medical correspondent.

Mukpo spent about two weeks at the hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. The hospital said he can head back home to Rhode Island on Wednesday.

"Recovering from Ebola is a truly humbling feeling," the hospital quoted Mukpo as saying. "Too many are not as fortunate and lucky as I've been. I'm very happy to be alive."  

CEO of oil giant Total killed in Moscow plane crash

The CEO of French oil company Total, Christophe de Margerie has died after a private jet crashed at a Moscow airport, Russian media reported Tuesday citing aviation and law enforcement sources.

"There was one passenger registered on the plane, French citizen Christophe de Margerie. The three crew members were also French citizens. They all died,"

It was reported that the plane "according to a preliminary version, crashed into a snow plough".
A Falcon-50 plane crashed at Vnukovo airport at 11:58 pm on Monday Moscow time (1958 GMT), apparently on takeoff, the emergencies ministry said in a statement.

    Paris: Total confirms with deep regret and great sadness that Chairman and CEO Christophe de Margerie died just after 10pm (Paris time) on October 20 in a private plane crash at Vnukovo Airport in Moscow, following a collision with a snow removal machine. Four people were found dead at the scene of the accident, including three crew member and Christophe de Margerie. The thoughts of the management and employees of the Group go out to Christophe de Margerie’s wife, children and loved ones as well as to the families of the three other victims.


The Chief executive who was based in Paris , France had gone to Russia to attend a meeting of corporate executives with Prime Minister Dmitri A. Medvedev and was returning to Paris when the accident occurred . He is survived by a wife and children . May his soul rest in peace .. Amen

Nyanya bomb Blast: Nigeria Police confirm 12 dead, 19 injured

While security agencies have condoned the area of an explosion last evening in Nyanya Abuja, response agencies have moved injured victims to hospitals and at least Nine (9) lifeless bodies have been deposited in the mortuary while 11 unconscious victims are receiving medical attention in different hospitals in Abuja.
The site is directly opposite the scene of the previous bomb blast, NEMA staff are at the site, there is smoke and huge pandemonium all around there....Also the site is just at the bus stop were people alight when coming from Abuja main city.
This bomb blast is coming six days to the World Economic Forum planned for the city center. The government is expected to re-assure participants of their safety in the coming hours.
