Fashion designers typically sketch the design for an outfit, create the pattern, pick out the fabric & trimmings, sew the garment, and fit the garment to the individual. Basically, fashion designers make clothes.
Fashion stylists on the other hand, are the ones to help with streamlining your closet, restructuring your wardrobe, finding your personal style, educating you on the best colours and shapes for your body type. A stylist helps you develop good shopping habits, i.e. makes you understand the right things to buy; and constantly helps you to improve your relationship with clothing.
Some years ago, when I was in the fashion school, I read an article online about styling, so I decided to contact the writer to further enlighten me on the difference between these two terms. He simply said a fashion designer can be likened to an engineer, that gets things done. While a stylist can be likened to an architect. Each of them with different and important roles.
In conclusion, it is not every fashion designer that is also a stylist, nor is every stylist necessarily a fashion designer. However, there are some very few exceptional people like Johnnie Peezu, that has an in-depth understanding of making well-tailored clothes as a professional fashion designer, and also as a stylist, that will always make you understand what to wear, how to wear, and what shapes are most flattering for your body type.
