Operatives of the Tin-Can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, have busted a syndicate that smuggled weapons into the country.
No fewer than 1,100 pump action rifles were loaded in a 20 foot container the gang shipped into the country.
The weapons, brought from Turkey, were concealed inside a container which Bill of Laden indicated was conveying wash hand basins.

Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Alli , disclosed that a Customs officer suspected to have cut the seal of the container without following due process, as well as a clerk at the command had been arrested
The weapons are believed to have been smuggled into the country by a gun-running syndicate.
The Controller-General told journalists at a briefing in Lagos on Monday Following a thorough examination of the said container on September 7, the Customs boss said the weapons included 600 pieces of Georgia Magnum Black Pump-Action rifles among other rifles.

“If you add 600 plus 300, plus 200, that’s 1,100 pieces of pump-action rifles that were brought in under the guise of wash-hand basins and some other items,” he said.
Alli also said a Customs officer and a clerk at the Tin-Can Island Command have been arrested as part of investigations.
