AirAsia flight QZ-8501 vanished from radar screens early on Sunday morning, 40 minutes after take-off from Indonesia’s second largest city Surabaya, heading to Singapore.
The pilot had requested permission to fly higher to avoid bad weather. It was not immediately granted because of heavy air traffic and by the time it was given, communication with the plane was lost.
