Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:
1.President Muhammadu Buhari will on Monday leave Nigeria to attend the 59th Proclamation of Republic of Niger. Buhari will also attend bilateral meetings before returning to Nigeria. He will be accompanied on the trip by Governors Aminu Masari, Ibrahim Gaidam and Kashim Shettima of Katsina, Yobe and Borno States.

2.Report says the Deposit Money Banks in the country borrowed about N671.47bn from the Central Bank of Nigeria in the past five working days. Information from the CBN.

CBN Standing Lending Facility window data revealed that commercial banks borrowed the sum between December 11 and 15, 2017.

3. The Sultan of Sokoto, Dr. Mohammad Sa’ad Abubakar has reacted to the raging controversy over Hijab. While lamenting over the controversy, he said that Hijab simply meant decent dressing for Muslim women and was part and parcel of Islam. He argued that Muslims were peace-, therefore, and should be allowed to practise their religion as stipulated by Allah and as contained in the traditions of Prophet Mohammad.

4. The naira depreciated marginally by 0.55 per cent at the parallel market week-on-week to close at N365 on Friday. The local currency was sold at 363/dollar last Friday. The fall has been blamed on the Christmas and New Year celebrations as demand for the currency has increased.

5. President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday quietly marked his 75 birthday. Even though his birthday was meant to be very quiet, Nigerian service chiefs and Governor Ibikunle Amosu of Ogun State on Sunday paid him a surprised visit at the State house alongside a birthday card.

6. The Niger State Police command has arrested one Aliyu Mohammed who allegedly cut off his cousin’s manhood for stealing his N3, 500. The 25-year-old man, resident of Babana Borgu in New Bussa local government area of Niger State, cut off his cousin’s manhood with a cutlass on refusal to pay up money he stole.

7. No fewer than four persons, including a vigilante chief have been hacked to death in a renewed communal clash that broke out in Ogobia community in Ugboju district, Otukpo LGA of Benue State Saturday night. Confirming the incident, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Moses Yamu, said four persons have so far been confirmed dead.

8. Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has said that the current scarcity of fuel in the country was a strategy by the Federal Government to justify the planned increment of petrol pump price from N145 to N185 per litre. This was contained in a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka.

9. The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami (SAN) has asked a Federal High Court in Kaduna to decline jurisdiction over a suit by embattled former chairman of the Presidential Pension Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, challenging the arrest warrant issued against him by an Abuja court. Malami asked the court to dismiss the suit and allow the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the government agency that got the arrest warrant, to proceed with Maina’s arrest and prosecution.

10. Report says Former Senate President, David Mark will on Monday, account for over N5.4billion slush cash and campaign funds traced to him. David Mark is also expected to respond to issues raised in the Panama Papers bordering on his relationship with some firms.
