Nigerian politicians violating electoral codes – Jega

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega on Monday in Abuja accused Nigerian politicians of not complying with the relevant provisions of the electoral code.
Jega raised the alarm during the 9th public lecture it jointly organized with The Electoral Institute with the theme: “Youth and electoral violence in Africa: Lesson for Nigeria.”

He, therefore, stated that as part of efforts to reduce the hate messages, the commission would be “meeting with traditional rulers to assist in the message of peace” and improve on its voter education programme.
According to him, the challenges facing the commission at present was to see how to make the political gladiators respect the code of conducts they signed.

Jega reiterated that hate messages promotes violence and hence stressed the need to keep by the rules of the game which would obviously help in the promotion of peace.

He said, “The challenge is mediating among politicians to respect the code of conduct that they have signed”.
