1. The Nigerian Army Council on Friday, appoved the promotion of 123 officers from the ranks of Majors to Lieutenant Colonels and from Lieutenant Colonels to Colonels with varying effective dates of seniority. A statement from the director army public relations, Brig. General Sani Kukasheka said, the promotion is in pursuant to the powers conferred on the Army Council by virtue of sections 10 (1) and 11(b) of the Armed Forces Act CAP A20 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
2. No fewer than 30 persons have been feared killed after a suicide bomber hit Shi‘ite mosque in Kabul on Friday. The attack occurred at Imam Zaman mosque in the western Dasht-e-Barchi part of Kabul, Afghanistan, as Shi‘ite worshippers gathered for prayers. A senior security official said that the exact number of casualties was unknown `but that security forces at the scene had removed at least 30 bodies.’’
3. A man identified as Oluseyi Adekunle, Friday afternoon jumped into the Lagos lagoon from the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge. Officials of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Marine Police and other relevant agencies were at the scene to rescue.
4. The Court of Appeal, Kebbi Division, has sentenced a former Kebbi State Accountant-General, Mohammed Dakingari, to seventy years in prison for N1.6bn fraud. He was sentenced to seven years imprisonment on each of the ten counts preferred against him.
5. A critic of Cross River State Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade’s government and All Progressive Congress (APC) Chieftain, Paul Efere has been arrested and detained at the Cross River State Police Headquarters on allegation of cultism and kidnapping. The suspect was arrested in Abuja and driven to Cross River State, where he was taken straight to the cell at the police headquarters.
6. Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has criticized the Federal Government for allegedly interfering in the judiciary. Speaking at a ceremony in Port Harcourt, for the opening of the 2018 Legal Year, Governor Wike accused the Federal Government of oppressing judges in the country.
7. Nigerian suicide bomber, Farouk Abdulmutallab, serving multiple life sentences has sued the U.S. Justice Department, Federal Bureau of Prisons and Attorney General Jeff Sessions for denying him free speech and religious rights. Abdulmutallab, referred to as the “underwear bomber” by the U.S. media, tried to detonate a bomb hidden in his underpants, on a flight from Amsterdam in the Netherlands to Detroit, United States, on Christmas Day in 2009.
8. FIFA has thrown out Zambia’s protest, regarding the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria on October 7 in Uyo.
The Super Eagles won the match 1-0 and qualified for their third straight World Cup, with a match to spare in African qualifying Group B. But the Football Association of Zambia were aggrieved that the referee, Joshua Bondo, was not entirely fair in his handling of the match.
9. Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has revealed how he was arrested and locked up two days for supporting Chris Ngige to become governor of Anambra State. El Rufai made this claim during the flag-off of All Progressives Congress, APC, campaign in Anambra on Friday.
10. Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has said that the federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari has so far spent $2bn from the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) for the completion of the second Niger Bridge. He said this during the flag-off of the governorship campaign of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Onitsha area of Anambra State.
