Newspapers Review: 10 Things You Need To Know In Nigeria Today


Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:
1.National leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, on Friday revealed the cause of his son, Jide’s death. The former Lagos State Governor, who described his son as a “highly intelligent person with a vibrant personality and a zest for life” said he died of cardiac arrest when it seemed he had so much life to still live.


2.  A former National Security Adviser, NSA, Sambo Dasuki, on Friday told the Federal High Court in Abuja that he would not be able to remember if the sum of N400m paid to a former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, in 2014, was for the provision of security services. Dasuki insisted that unless he checks his record, he would be unable to clarify.

3. The Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, on Friday vowed to crush everything on its path until a united Niger Delta is achieved. Announcing the suspension of its ceasefire, the militant group vowed that its latest campaign would be brutish, brutal and bloody. This was contained in a statement by its spokesman, Mudoch Agbinibo.

4. A nephew of former President, Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Oguanisi Akpusu, had been arrested in Bayelsa State over the alleged shooting of two persons during a masquerade in Emeyal 1 community in Ogbia Local Government Area. He was, however, released as the police said the shooting was accidental. No information was provided on how he got hold of the gun used in the shootings.

5. A prosecution witness, Anselem Dunu, on Friday told an Ikeja High Court how billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, alias Evans refused to release his brother, Donatus Dunu despite paying him the sum of €223,000, equivalent of N100m .Dunu told the Justice Hakeem Oshodi -led court that his brother was in the kidnapper’s den for four months. He said his brother later escaped.

6. The Ebonyi State police command yesterday confirmed the escape of four kidnap suspects from its custody. The suspects include Ogonna Alioke, Friday Nwangbo, Emeka Nwangbo and Ekene Omenyi. The suspects were detained for allegedly kidnapping and killing one late Mrs Catherine Okorie. The commissioner of police, Titus Lamorde made this known while addressing journalists in Abakaliki.

7. Three foreigners have been reportedly kidnapped by unknown gunmen in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. Report says the foreigners were travelling in a motorcade when they were attacked around Tank Junction in Rumukurushi community.
One of the police escorts in the motorcade was killed alongside two others in a gun battle with the armed men.

8. A 27-year-old man identified as Henry Ushie has been arrested for impersonating an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, who heads the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigerian Police.
This was made known on Friday through a statement personally signed by Abba Kyari.
According to him, Ushie, who hails from Bekwara Iga Cross River state, was arrested in the early hours of Friday in Asaba Delta state.

9. The embattled ex-Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Alhaji Abdulrasheed Maina, has accused the 7th Senate, led by David Mark, of aiding pension thieves. The accusation, contained in a letter which leaked on Friday, was written to the Senate on June 19, 2015. In the letter, Maina alleged that over N3tn hidden had yet to be recouped from 97 pension offices before he escaped from the country.

10.President Muhammadu Bubari has approved the immediate medical treatment of former Vice-President, Dr Alex Ekwueme, outside the country. The approval comes after a brief the President received Friday on the medical condition of the former Vice-President. The approval covers the immediate charter of an Air Ambulance for the emergency movement and the cost of treatment.
