Senate declines request for extension of emergency rule

The Senate has turned down the request by President Goodluck Jonathan to extend the state of emergency imposed on three North-eastern states of Adamawa, Yobe and Borno in the wake of violent activities of the Boko Haram insurgency.
The National Defence Council had met on Monday to review happenings in the Northeast and decided at the end of the meeting to extend the emergency rule in the states by another tranche of six months.

The president on the same day forwarded a letter to the National Assembly for approval of the extension.
The Senate, at Wednesday's sitting was divided over the presidential request for the extension, necessitating today’s decision.
The House of Representatives is also billed to reconvene for a special plenary tomorrow to deliberate on the presidential request for the extension.
