The University of Jos has been shut down indefinitely after a protest by students over hike in fees turned violent On Tuesday
Security officials was later called in when the protest continued to calm the situation. But a soldier attached to the Special Taskforce on Jos crisis (STF), instead of calming the situation opened fire on protesters leaving at least 8 students with gun wounds including a blind one.
The University Registrar, Jully Dandam, after a hurriedly convened management meeting, announced the institution will remain closed till further notice.
The school management also ordered all students to vacate the campus before 2 p.m. today as a way of halting the violence and stopping the crisis from spreading to other parts of the state.
None of the students has died, but are presently receiving treatment.
