Members of the Quarry Owners Association of Nigeria (QOAN), Ondo State Chapter, at the weekend, staged a peaceful protest over what they described as unlawful collection of multiple taxes by the statement government.
The aggrieved workers, in their hundreds prevented officers of the state revenue service from collecting taxes at one of their quarry depots at Elegbeka, Ifon-Benin expressway in Ondo State.
They based their grievances on the fact that 50 percent of them have been sacked by their employers due to the alleged high tax rate from the government
While, expressing dissatisfaction with the alleged multiple taxes, they said this has affected the business of their employers.
The Vice-Chairman of QOAN, Mr. Ojo Jimoh said they have lost several customers due to the huge taxes and this he said has also brought an inflation to the price of their product.
According to him, “we now pay government N3000 to N5000 per trailer. What I am saying is that before a trailer can move out of this premises, such trailer will be charged between N3000 to N5000 by the government. This is really killing our business and most of our workers have been laid off.”
Jimoh appealed to the state government to stop its tax officers from harassing their drivers and maintain the status -quo over the matter which he said is pending in the court.
However, the leader of the consultancy team in charge of the State Government tax Collection, Mr. Akinfaderin Oye denied that the taxes were unlawful.
He said the government has the legitimate right to collect tax from the association, adding that all the actions taken by the government are constitutionally guided.
