Newspapers Review: 10 Things You Need To Know Today

Good day! Happy Monday,here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers.

1. Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has said his Plateau State counterpart, Simon Lalong was using the recent attacks on Benue indigenes to score cheap political points. Ortom said Lalong’s claim that he warned him (Ortom) against signing the anti-open grazing bill into law was a cheap blackmail. He said the Plateau governor does not have the right to warn him because he was not his staff.

2. Operatives of the Ojodu Abiodun Police Station in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State were attacked on Sunday by some youths who invaded the division and vandalised property. The youths who were protesting the shooting of their colleague by the police reportedly broke into the cell of the station, freed detained suspects and carted away some valuables, including television sets and seized some motorcycles.

3. Pro-Democracy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has called on the Federal government to order the arrest and prosecution of the National Officials of the Miyetti Allah Cattle owners Association for the alleged threats they made soon after the Benue State House of Assembly passed the anti-open grazing law. The group also noted that, the Department of State Services and the military should flush out perpetrators of the various bloodletting attacks by armed Fulani herdsmen.

4. President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday met with leadership of the National Assembly over the crisis in Benue State and other parts of the country. The meeting between Buhari, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara was held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Details of the meeting have not been disclosed yet.

5. The 2017 Ghana AIDS Commission report on HIV/AIDS infection shows an 80% increases in new cases. The report also indicates that the Volta Region and Brong Ahafo Region topped the chart of HIV/AIDS prevalence.
The findings were revealed at the Commission’s two-day annual strategic planning meeting. The Ghana AIDS Commission is, therefore, asking Ghanaians to be extra careful in order not to contract the deadly disease.

6. Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation and former Governor of Rivers State, says he has never asked any cultist to kill anyone in order to win election. Amaechi challenged cultists in the state to come out and present proves. The Minister spoke when he visited families of those killed by cultists on New Year day in Omoku, the headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of the state.

7. Report says no fewer than six members of the Kwankwasiyya and Gandujiyya groups of the All Progressives Congress were on Sunday injured in Kano following a clash between the two groups. According to the report, the fight started when one of the groups allegedly attacked the other and a younger brother to the Commissioner of Special Duties, Abdullahi Abbas, and many others were injured.

8. The Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku has said that the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, were fighting hard to turn the story of the killing of innocent Nigerians upside down. According to Ishaku, the herders were employing all manners of blackmail and propaganda to turn themselves into victims. He maintained that the herdsmen were the killers and not the victims.

9. The Nigerian Air Force on Sunday in Kaduna displayed five new Super Mushshak aircraft purchased by the Federal Government from Pakistan to fight the Boko Haram insurgency. This now brings the number to 10 trainer aircraft supplied by Pakistan to Nigeria to aid the counter-terrorism operations.

10. Gunmen, suspected to be kidnappers, have abducted a former Commissioner for Transport in Bayelsa State, Mrs. Marie Ebikake, and a military official in the state. The abductions took place at different locations. Ebikake was abducted from her residence in Igbogene, Yenagoa, while the soldier known as Rotimi, was abducted along the Foropa-Gbarain route of the Southern Ijaw creek.
