Good day! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers1. Youths in their hundreds, yesterday brought commercial activities in Makurdi, the Benue State capital to a halt in protest against the killings of people of the state by Fulani herdsmen.
The youths, who converged at the popular Food Basket Roundabout in Wurukum, Makurdi, the state capital asked President Muhammadu Buhari to “act now or resign.”
2. President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday ordered security agencies to do “everything possible” to arrest those behind the killing of residents of Benue State.
While expressing immense sadness at the “wicked and callous” attacks on “even innocent children,” the President assured the governor and people of the state that “relevant security agencies have been directed to do everything possible to arrest those behind the regrettable incidents and avert further attacks.”
3. A national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ahmed Bolaji Tinubu, has reportedly told President Muhammadu Buhari that the condition for supporting him (Buhari) ahead 2019 general elections would be renegotiated.
Report says that Tinubu told Buhari that him and his loyalists in the South-west were ready to back Buhari’s re-election bid, but that the condition for their support would be different this time around.
4. Ahead of the 2019 general elections, over 10 Arewa Youth groups have declared support for the next Nigeria President to come from the South-East.
The groups, including Arewa Youth Forum, Arewa Youths Coalition for Peace, Northern Central Youth Club and Youths for One Nigeria made the declaration in Imo State yesterday during a youth summit, said the decision would engender national unity and cohesion.
5. Ten persons were reportedly killed in an early morning suicide bomb attack at Gamboru town in Gamboru-Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State.
Reports say that the incident occurred at about 5: 00am, when a male suicide bomber detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), strapped to his body in a mosque at Yobe area of Gamboru.
6. An Appeal Court sitting in Abuja has declared Elder Chinedu Okoronkwo as the National President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN).
The court dismissed the appeal against the judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, in Suit No: FCT/HC/CV/1479/2014, which was delivered on May 28, 2014 by Justice Valentine Ashi.
7. The ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as dead and not capable of winning Lagos state in the 2019 elections.
Lagosians trusted the APC government in the state to deliver impactful leadership, saying PDP lacked the drive for progress. Assistant Publicity Secretary of the APC in the state, Mr Abiodun Salami said.
8. Members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) Abeokuta Chapter, on Wednesday suspended their three-month strike
The suspension was announced by the chapter’s Chairman, Mr Kola Abiola, after a congress held at the institution’s campus to resolve the crisis between the Ogun State Government and the union.
9. Igbo apex socio-cultural organization, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has vowed that the Igbo would never again go to war to resolve conflicts in the country.
It said the Igbos would rather use diplomacy as a tool for conflict resolution.
10. President Muhammadu Buhari will today in Kaduna inaugurate ten new coaches. The new trains, when inaugurated have the capacity to travel for up to 150km per hour.
