Newspapers Review: 10 Things You Need To Know Today
Good Day! Happy Monday,here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers.1. President Muhammadu Buhari and former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday met at the opening session of the 30th African Union Summit.
The leaders, who met for the first time after former President Obasanjo blasted President Buhari in a 13-page statement, shook hands and talked for about two minutes before proceeding for the meeting.
2. The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) has announced that all 389 candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won Saturday’s councillorship election.
Releasing the official results to reporters yesterday in Osogbo, the capital, OSIEC Chairman Segun Oladitan said 318 of the candidates were returned unopposed.
3. Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, has given a hint that President Muhammadu Buhari will run in 2019.
Mustapha, who spoke at a reception organised for the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Affairs Office, Barr. Georgina Ehuria, by the former governor of Abia State, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, stated that he expected Nigerians, especially those from across the Niger to support the president ahead of the 2019 presidential election.
4. The Nigerian Army has called on the public, especially people in the North East, to look out for Boko Haram escapees hiding among them and promptly report them to security agencies.
It said troops had inflicted heavy casualties on Boko Haram terrorists and routed them from their various hideouts in Sambisa forest.
5. Dr. Kayode Fayemi and his finance commissioner are being accused of misappropriating the sum of N4.9 billion being the proceeds of Ekiti State Bond for the sum of N20 billion earmarked in the Bond Prospectus for various projects in the state that were either not done or partly done. The state government has filed criminal charges against Fayemi and his Finance Commissioner, Mr. Dapo Kolawole.
Meanwhile, in a counter suit, Fayemi’s commissioner slammed a N20 billion suit against Governor Ayo Fayose and two of his aides for alleged libel.
6. Nigeria has qualified for the semi-final of the ongoing Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco.
The home-based Super Eagles battled back from a goal down to defeat Angola 2-1 in extra-time on Sunday.
7. Music's biggest Awards night was held Sunday, inside New York City's Madison Square Garden as the Grammy Awards were handed out by the Recording Academy.
Despite Jay-Z leading the pack this year with eight nominations, Bruno Mars took home the top award of the night. Mr. Mars won ALL SIX of the awards he was nominated for, including the top prizes of Album, Record and Song of the year.
Kendrick Lamar also bested Jay-Z in the best rap album category, eventually going home with FIVE trophies
8. Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, yesterday said the Federal Government has spent over N1 Billion on Ekwueme’s burial.
The Minister, who is a member of the national burial committee, after visiting Oko to inspect preparations for the burial, expressed satisfaction with the level of work already done.
9. Leader of Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Sunday night, spoke fiercely against the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government, asserting that he has failed.
Bakare said expectations of Nigerians had not been met by the Federal Government and that he was particularly disappointed about the handling of killings by herdsmen, particularly that of Benue State.
10. The third season of reality TV series, Big Brother Nigeria was launched on Sunday with 20 contestants also known as “housemates”.
This year’s edition, which is tagged “double wahala”
The show is running for a second consecutive running year as it had previously suffered a 10-year hiatus after holding its first edition in 2006. Popular artists, Mayorkun and Kiss Daniel performed live during the launch
