Declare Your Assets, Group Tells President Jonathan...
Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has expressed its congratulations to President Goodluck Jonathan for openly disclosing the donations he has so far received for his re-election bid.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Osita Okechukwu, CNPP said it was enthused that Mr. Jonathan, in the spirit of openness and doctrine of transparency, chose to release the list, noting that it ranged from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors, Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), Central Markets Traders Union to Otuoke Community Stakeholders, as being among those who are supportive of his candidature.
“For finding it prudent to openly declare his campaign donations, may we once more request President Jonathan to likewise openly declare his assets, as his predecessor, Umaru Musa Yaradua of blessed memory did,” the statement said.
“This we reason will forever put to rest the allegation of United States based online medium - Richestlifesytle.com that he is the sixth richest African Head of State, valued to be worth $100m.”
Most importantly, CNPP noted, such an open declaration will to a great extent erase the hunch in some quarters that President Jonathan doesn't give a damn about corruption and that his regime is the most corrupt in the annals of Nigerian history.
“The doctrine of openness and transparency, we opine will be better served with open declaration of Mr President's assets, than the declaration of paltry donations from favour bound individual and sundry groups,” the statement said.
President Jonathan said in 2012 he will never openly declare his assets and that he does not “give a damn” what anyone says. Many Nigerians say that is because he has something to hide, having been indicted for false declaration of assets in 2006, and found wanting in his only public declaration in 2007.
